En 1952, la poetisa norteamericana Helne Joy Davidson Gresham, católica, divorciada y comunista, apareció en la vida del cincuentón clive Staples Lewis, católico, soltero y eminente hombre de letras británico, que ejercía en aquel entonces su magisterio en Oxford. Helen- H., como se la denomina en el libro- sentía desde hacía tiempo una profunda admiración por Lewis, al que hasta ese momento sólo conocía a través de sus obras y de un escaso intercambio epistolar.Del encuentro personal surgió el amor, al que el ya maduro escritor se entregó con entusiasmo. Pero la dicha duró poco: Helen enfermó de cáncer y murió, dejando a Lewis sumido en el dolor.
El presente libro, excelentemente traducido por Carmen Martín Gaite, es el fruto de ese dolor. C. S Lewis reflexiona sobre su desdicha, sobre la pérdida del ser amado, y que se confronta con Dios, con su aparente ausencia y con la que parece ser su verdadera naturaleza.
